#RIP to another rock legend who has left us far too soon.
TMZ reports that Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington has committed suicide.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ that the 41-year-old vocalist was found dead by dangling at his Palos Verdes Estates residence in Los Angeles County just before 9 a.m. Thursday.
Bennington had openly discussed the drug and alcohol addiction he struggled with during his troubled youth and throughout the chart-topping heavy rock band’s early years.
Linkin Park’s latest album, One More Light, was their sixth record to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Hit tracks from 2000’s Hybrid Theory and 2003’s Meteora such as “In the End,” “Breaking the Habit,” and “Crawling” remain a staple of rock and roll radio to this day.
Bennington was also a close friend of Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, who also committed suicide by hanging earlier this year. Today would have been Cornell’s 53rd birthday. Chester had written an open letter to Chris on the day of Chris’ suicide.
Cornell’s wife, Vicky, tweeted out a message following the news of Chester’s death, saying, “Just after i thought my heart couldn’t break any more … I love you T.”
The band has had a string of hits over time, including “Faint,” “In the long run” and “Crawling.” Linkin Park crossed music genres, collaborating with Jay-Z.
He is left behind his wife, Talinda Ann Bentley, and six children.
UPDATE from TMZ:
Chester Bennington may have mimicked the suicide of his close friend, Chris Cornell, because they died in practically identical ways.
Law enforcement resources tell us, the Linkin Recreation area singer is dangling from a door separating his bedroom from his wardrobe. TMZ broke the story, Chris Cornell died hanging from a hotel door separating the bedroom from the bathroom.
We’re also told Chester was found with a belt around his neck. Chris has had an exercise band around his throat.
Our sources say there was a partially clear bottle of alcohol in the room. That is where Chester died, but no evidence of drugs.
And we have information that Chester did not leave a suicide take note in the area. Neither did Chris.
